Our first postcard ever from France

A new walnut wine recipe

This week we are so excited to have received our first postcard ever! Anya Cockle-Bétian, from France has sent us the most heartily thank-you note ever, but most importantly a walnut wine recipe to taste with our future guests! Sofia is especially happy for the recipe, to be completely honest! We are definitely going to try it in the end of May – beginning of June; as Anya advices us!

Thank you once more Anya and Eva for staying with us. It was a genuine pleasure meeting you, indeed.

We had wonderful holidays in Kokkinos Pirgos which is really far away from the mass tourism you can find in the big cities of Crete - thank God! Ioannis and Sofia (which are so kind and lovely!!) were there for us when we arrived very late, when the shower didn't work well, brought fruit and vegetables and asked always whether we are fine! The room is cozy and well equiped (we cooked nearly every day - be careful, the dog Yoko likes food and is barking when he hears you eating :D), next to two nice beaches. Its very useful to have a car, to go to the supermarket which is like 5 km away.

I had a great stay at Ioannis's place! He's incredibly friendly & welcoming! He had water, fruit & juice waiting for me when I arrived. My room was very clean, & I had everything I needed to have a wonderful stay. It was only for one night, but I should've stayed longer!

We stayed at Ioannis‘s a place for two nights. He was calmly waiting for us until the late evening ‘cuz we have arrived later than we expected. He was very cheerful and hospitable. Ioannis helped us to figure things out and did his best to help us feel comfortable. The room was clean and cozy with all the stuff you may need during the stay. Very recommended host! Thank you!

Nice place from where you can go to Kokkinos Beach by foot, or few kilometers from other pleasant beaches as Kommos for instance. Very near impressive Festos and Gortyne ruins. Ioannis always smiling and helping. I hope to have opportunity to come back.

About the place: Kokkinos Pyrgos

Kokkinos Pyrgos (i.e. Red Tower, in Greek: Κόκκινος Πύργος) is a small port village (and recently a blooming beach resort) in the south of the Greek island of Crete. It belongs to the municipality of Festos. It is located about 67km west of Heraklion, close to the town of Tymbaki,* between Matala (15 kilometers distance) and Agia Galini (10 kilometers distance). Its name suggests a red clay(?) tower, of which nothing is known. The climate of the region is generally warm (and many times windy!) and many locals grow fresh vegetables in greenhouses.

The harbor of Kokkinos Pyrgos offers docking facilities for sailing and fishing boats. In front of the village, there is a very long sandy beach, which starts here and extends for several kilometers to the southeast, till Kommos. This long beach hosts several loggerhead sea turtles (Carretta carretta) that lay their eggs in the sand during summer. The sea turtles and the nests are protected by several organizations. The beach of Kokkinos Pirgos is open to the west winds. It starts on the east from the wire-fence of the military airport of Tymbaki and runs to the west, till Agia Galini.

The eastern part of the beach, from the port till the airport, is named Katalyki. Katalyki is a well-organized beach with umbrellas and sunbeds. There is a seaside road running along the coast with many cafes and restaurants, making this popular for a breakfast, brunch, lunch, dinner or just for a coffee or a drink.

The beach of the area stretching west of the harbor is named Kakoscalo or Makrimaliana. This is not organized and is completely remote. It's only you, the sun, and the sand. Perhaps, you may also be impressed by the rock formations which have been sculpted by wind and sea.

*Tymbaki is located a bit inland and is a larger village (thus a town!) with many amenities like supermarkets, shops, banks, etc., and once a week on a Friday there is an open flea market where you can buy local products.
